Started by Rene Moquin in 1967, the business quickly developed a reputation for its customer service, customer satisfaction and merchandise quality. In 1987 Rene’s youngest son, Denis, took over the business and has continued to offer the same great customer service that his father started over 50 years ago.

TRADITION IN LEOMINSTER

Rene’s Formal Wear was started in 1967 by Rene Moquin former owner of Long’s Men Shop in Fitchburg. As Long’s Men Shop was coming to a close due to the increase of new stores and mall construction, Rene decided to continue the tuxedo portion of the business in his home. He wanted to start a tuxedo rental business with a free delivery and pick up service. His idea was to go directly to people’s homes and measure the wedding party. Just like the days of fresh bread and milk on your door steps, when personalized service was authentic and honest.

Today, his son continues that old fashioned service with pride. Most people in town would remember the infamous VW bus which Rene would deliver the tuxedos in. It definitely became his trademark. After 18 years of a comfortable business it was time for retirement. Rene’s son Denis took an interest in renting tuxedos and helped his father out for several years before assuming the business in 1987. Denis runs the business with the help and support from his wife Patricia Cunningham Moquin. They still carry on the tradition of the personalized service and many long term friendships have emerged from their business relationships.

Rene has been in the business long enough to be able to enjoy the progression on generations. Don’t get greedy. Establish friendship before business. Cater to your customer. Treat people like you want to be treated. This is some of the advice Rene Moquin passed on to his son Denis nine years ago along with the family business. It’s advice that Denis Moquin still practices today. Rene’s Formal Wear, started in 1967, is a tuxedo shop specializing in tuxedos only. And, according to Denis Moquin, “service is what sets us apart.”

When it comes to customer service, Rene’s delivers. Literally. For wedding parties, Denis and his wife, Pat, go to customers’ homes to take measurements, bringing with them sample coats, swatches, vests, shoes and ties. In addition, they deliver and pickup the tuxedos for free. “We don’t require a deposit”, said Denis, “we receive payment on delivery, people are amazed at that. That’s as old fashioned as you can get.”

PARTY ATMOSPHERE

The in-home measuring, which takes about an hour and a half, can turn what some people may consider a chore or inconvenience into a fun, relaxed party, he said. Not everyone can walk into other people’s homes and make them feel comfortable, but Denis helped his father carry shoe bags and clothing racks since he was in grammar school. “My father had the gift to gab and he passed it on to me,” he said.

Rene’s Formal Wear schedules wedding parties by appointment only to give their customers their full attention. Appointments should be scheduled 8-10 weeks before your wedding day.
